Canongate
Canongate was founded in 1973.
Good things and bad things happened, and they became independent again following a management buyout in 1994. Canongate Books has since emerged as one of the most dynamic publishing houses in Britain.
With a distinctly international outlook, Canongate Books continues to nurture and publish new talent from around the world, whilst retaining the essence of the Scottish Canon. They have no specific agenda other than to promote and publish challenging, quality work from as broad a perspective as they are able.

Faber and Faber
Faber and Faber is one of the last of the great independent publishing houses in London. The firm was established in 1929 by Geoffrey Faber, and one of his first successes was to bring in none other than T. S. Eliot to act as a ‘literary adviser’. Eliot stayed with Faber for the next 40 years. Today Faber is particularly well-known for its unrivalled list of modern poets and playwrights, as well as for publishing writers of prize-winning fiction and general non-fiction, including eleven Nobel laureates and six Booker Prize-winners.

Gallic Books
Gallic Books was founded by Managing Director, Jane Aitken, working with Editorial Director, Pilar Webb. Colleagues for many years at Random House UK, they are both committed francophiles.
Gallic published their first books in 2007 in the belief that English-speaking readers would welcome the chance to read new French writing in translation. And this has proved to be true notably with the success of Muriel Barbery’s The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Their books can be categorised as quality fiction, although not necessarily literary, and they have a range of genres from historical crime and historical fiction through contemporary fiction to black comedy.
- ‘I think Gallic Books has been one of the great publishing success stories of recent years.’ SCOTT PACK
- ‘Gallic Books are putting out loads of good stuff … and they deserve a lot of credit.’ BIG GREEN BOOKSHOP
- ‘I think that Gallic Books are unique and I’m hugely excited that they are making remarkable books accessible to us.’ CAROLINE SMAILES
